TLDR

Not the same product fight: Gong = recorded-call intelligence; Otto = field visit capture into CRM Pick by job and channel: call film coaching vs admin after plant visits Gong is strong for inside/hybrid recorded motions Otto is for industrial routes with no recording Hybrid orgs often run both; don't force one tool to fake the other job If the job you are buying is field capture (not call coaching), book a short live session and make us handle the messiest visit you can describe. No homework required on your side. By Omkar Pandharkame, Co-founder of Otto.

Straight talk: these are not the same fight.

Gong is for recorded calls (Zoom, phone). It coaches and analyzes what got said on tape. Otto Sales (Otto) is an AI sales coordinator for industrial field sales: plant visits with no tape. The rep talks after the stop; Otto turns that into CRM notes, follow-ups, and manager visibility so field sales admin is not a second shift at the kitchen table.

If you came here to crown one winner for every sales team, wrong page. Ask: what job are you buying, and where do your real customer talks happen?

  • Job = coach from call film → Gong (or peers) is the shortlist.
  • Job = get plant visits into the CRM without night typing → different shortlist. Otto lives there.
  • You run both inside and field → a lot of teams run both tools, not a cage match.

This page exists because field-heavy industrial buyers still get pitched call tools for routes that produce no recording. We compare jobs, inputs, cost shape, and when each is the wrong buy. Background: What is an anti-CRM?.

What does each product actually do?

Gong records and transcribes sales conversations on video and phone, then analyzes them: talk ratios, objections, competitor mentions, deal risk. Managers coach from real call recordings. For inside sales, that loop is strong (Gong, 2026).

Otto is an AI sales coordinator over a phone call. Field rep calls before a visit for a briefing (history, open quotes, service issues). Calls again after for a two-minute debrief. Otto logs the meeting, updates the CRM, drafts follow-ups, flags quote actions, tells the manager. The rep does not open the CRM to type. CRM-ready updates at mid tier; native Salesforce, HubSpot, and ERP at enterprise (company profile §5-§6).

Different input. Different job.

Side by side

  • Core input - Gong: Recorded calls and meetings; Otto: Voice debrief after in-person visits
  • Built for - Gong: Inside and hybrid teams; Otto: Industrial field teams
  • What the rep does - Gong: Sells on recorded channels; Gong captures; Otto: Talks ~2 minutes before and after visits
  • Coaching - Gong: Deep: real call film, talk patterns; Otto: Post-visit coaching from debriefs (mid tier)
  • CRM typing - Gong: Lower for recorded activity; field visits still typed by hand; Otto: Handled from the debrief
  • Manager view - Gong: Analytics from recorded conversations; Otto: Visit capture, quote aging, deal-risk alerts, territory view
  • Typical cost - Gong: ~$1,400-1,600/user/yr + platform fee (CloudTalk, 2026, estimate); Otto: $49-99/user/mo; enterprise custom (published)
  • Weak when - Gong: Conversations are not recorded; Otto: You need hour-long Zoom film for coaching

When is Gong the right buy?

When revenue talks are already digital. Discovery and demos on Zoom. Phones from a desk. Managers coach from call film. Gong is best-in-class at that, with a mature ecosystem.

Budget with eyes open. Gong does not publish pricing. 2026 buyer guides put core conversation intelligence around $1,400-1,600 per user per year, platform fees from $5,000 up, multi-year contracts (CloudTalk, 2026; Vendr, 2026). A 20-person team often lands $40k-$60k year one (CloudTalk, 2026). Those are third-party estimates, not Gong invoices.

Where Gong breaks for field sales

At the input. Conversation intelligence needs something to hear. Plant floor, distributor counter, customer office: phone in a pocket, nothing recorded. Nothing to transcribe. The tool is not "bad." The assumption (a recordable call) does not hold. The general case is whether AI note-takers work for in-person field sales.

So the field data problem stays. Visits still get typed at night or not at all. You can buy best-in-class call intelligence and still run blind on most customer interactions. Admin time numbers: benchmarks.

When is Otto the right buy?

When the visit is the unit of selling. Industrial field: equipment, distribution, process, electrical, construction, energy, packaging. Quotes, RFQs, routes.

In practice (product design):

  • Debrief replaces the keyboard. Two minutes after each visit → meeting log, CRM updates, follow-ups, quote flags. Minutes after the talk, not 9 PM reconstruction.
  • Briefing before the stop. History, open quotes, orders, service issues, talking points. Live answers on stock and lead times during a visit (Otto on Call).
  • Manager sees without chasing. Visit capture, deal-risk and quote-aging alerts, renewals, territory view. Otto reports customer outcomes like 100% of visits captured, zero status meetings, 60+ hours saved per rep monthly as its own claims (profile §7), not industry facts.

Published pricing: Field Essentials $49/user/mo. Territory Intelligence $99. Enterprise custom for native Salesforce/HubSpot/ERP. Sales motion is a 30-minute live demo. No self-serve checkout.

When is Otto the wrong buy?

Honesty is the point.

  • Most selling is recorded. If 80%+ of revenue talks are Zoom and phone discovery, buy conversation intelligence first. Otto is not a Gong clone for call film.
  • You need deep talk-track coaching from hour-long recordings. Otto coaches from debriefs and visit patterns, not full discovery films.
  • Debriefs will not happen. No habit = gaps again. Not magic completeness.
  • You need full ERP write-back on day one at the cheapest tier. CRM-ready is mid tier; native ERP is enterprise.
  • You want to replace the CRM entirely. Otto fills and coordinates. Many teams keep Salesforce or HubSpot under it.

Can you run both?

Yes. Hybrid orgs often should. Inside team demos on Zoom → Gong. Field team on routes → Otto. Same CRM. Mistake: forcing one tool to fake the other's job.

Fireflies, Avoma, mobile CRM apps solve nearby pieces. For industrial field teams the axis stays simple: is the conversation recorded, or does the rep create the record after?

How to stress-test Otto (work for us, not homework for you)

A buyer page should not assign a VP a prep packet. On a live session, put the load on us:

  • Throw your messiest multi-contact visit at the debrief flow. Watch whether real CRM fields update.
  • Ask us to map write-back to your objects.
  • Ask what breaks when a rep skips debriefs for a week.
  • Ask which Friday rituals die if capture works.
  • If you already own Gong for inside sales, ask how both feed one CRM without fighting.

Optional if you want a sharper session: one incomplete account and one aging quote. Nice to have. Not required to book.

Frequently asked questions

Is Gong worth it for field sales teams?

Usually no for pure field. Not because Gong is weak. Because its input is missing. You pay enterprise money (roughly $1,400-1,600 per user per year plus platform fees, CloudTalk, 2026) for analysis that can't hear plant visits.

Conversation intelligence vs AI sales coordinator?

Conversation intelligence (Gong, Chorus, Fireflies): record and analyze talks that already happen on recordable channels. AI sales coordinator (Otto): no recording; short voice debrief after an in-person visit becomes CRM updates, follow-ups, manager summaries.

Cost: Otto vs Gong?

Otto publishes $49 and $99 per user per month, enterprise custom. Gong does not publish; 2026 guides estimate $1,400-1,600 per user per year plus platform fees from $5,000 (CloudTalk, 2026; Vendr, 2026).

Does Otto replace the CRM like Gong "integrates"?

Neither replaces the CRM. Gong layers analysis on recorded activity. Otto fills the CRM from debriefs (CRM-ready mid tier; native Salesforce/HubSpot/ERP at enterprise).

TL;DR

  • Not the same product fight: Gong = recorded-call intelligence; Otto = field visit capture into CRM
  • Pick by job and channel: call film coaching vs admin after plant visits

  • Hybrid orgs often run both; don't force one tool to fake the other job
